45" Granadillo Center Piece
At Moss & Stone, our passion for design and love of woodworking have led to the creation of beautiful, functional pieces like the ones you’ll see presented here at mossandstone.com. Because each piece is made by hand one at a time, and since wood is a natural material, every piece features unique characteristics. The color combinations are endless. While some of the woods used come from as far away as Africa, Europe, and Australia, others are harvested from the most unlikely places, such as a piece of firewood or trees removed from a kind neighbor’s yard. No matter where the wood is from, we treat each piece as a gift from nature and employ our mature talents to reveal what it has to offer.
At Moss & Stone we take special care to expose the beauty hidden within each piece of wood that comes into the shop. Subjected to an array of techniques, tools, caring hands, and the sharp eye of the designer, all Moss & Stone products undergo a transformation from rough lumber to wooden works of art. Once the natural beauty is exposed in each piece, several different finishes are used to enhance and protect them. For food-worthy bowls, cutting boards, and utensils, a combination of natural oils and bee’s wax is used. For decorative pieces such as knife handles, bottle stoppers, candlesticks, and clocks, a finish such as lacquer or polyurethane is applied and then waxed to the desired sheen.

Various Woods Used at Moss & Stone
Unless requested by the customer, none of the pieces shown here contain stains other than those supplied by Mother Nature. If you see a bright yellow piece, it is likely from a tree found in North America called Osage Orange. Many people call the fruit of this tree “Monkey Brains” or “Hedge Apples". If you see a chocolate brown piece, it is likely Black Walnut, which can be found in the eastern U.S. and down to the northwest portion of South America. Another one to look for is African Padauk, which is recognized for its distinctive red or orange color and grows in tropical West Africa. It is used for making dyes and it is an ideal boat building wood.
