Butternut w/Wenge Rim

This bowl is a great example of how the combination of domestic and exotic woods can come together and yield a magnificent piece that is functional as well as beautiful. The amber hue of the Butternut is pleasantly framed by the Wenge rim to focus your attention on the swirling grain lines of the Butternut. This is a one-of-a-kind piece but matching single service bowls and spoons could be provided upon request. Though it is intended for salads, this piece would make a beautiful centerpiece or fruit bowl for any dining room table.

Spalted Sycamore, Padauk

Erika Sushi Plates bring you one step closer to the sushi bar in the comfort of your own home. This plate can be ordered with matching chopsticks. The Jessica Lamp is made with a vellum which is two layers thick. This acts as great diffuser, and the lamp produces a soft light from all four sides that is great to read by before turning in for the evening. The one shown here is 14" tall but could be made as a floor lamp if requested.

Cherry, Walnut, Aluminum

This clock was designed as a special gift and is truly one-of-a-kind. The inlay of Walnut and aluminum makes a cross in the clock face that indicates the 12, 3, 6 & 9 positions. The aluminum accents act as a visual tie from the hands to the legs which are surrounded by polished aluminum pins. The 2" thick Cherry clock is supported by a Walnut arch which is also representative of a hill upon which the cross rests.

Zebra Wood

This is a fine example of the smaller bowls offered by Moss & Stone. These pieces serve as dip or sauce bowls to accompany a larger bowl or platter and can usually be ordered to match the larger piece. The shape of the one shown here is great for serving nuts or mints since there are no steep transitions from the bottom to the sides on the inside of the bowl.

The pedestal display was designed to present your decoration of choice from a flower arrangement to your favorite photo frame in a narrow hall. The book-matched Birdseye Maple is framed nicely by the thin bead of Wenge and sturdy frame of Walnut. Like most Moss & Stone pieces, the back is finished to allow use where all sides are visible.

Mahogany, Bocote

These urns are intended for decorative purposes but make great pencil cups. The beaded Bocote rims reveal a mixture of light and dark grain that blend perfectly with the warm tones of the Mahogany.

Walnut, Cast iron legs

The inspiration for this table/wine rack was the cast iron legs from a Singer Treadle sewing machine. There is space for 4 bottles on the middle shelf, and the additional shelves are for decorative items of your choice. The 32" tall table surface is a nice working height when decanting your favorite wine.

Sail Lamps are named for their long, tapered legs that look like abstract sails. These lamps are usually a combination of 2 contrasting woods and a complimentary vellum shade. Moss and Stone lamps are offered with multi position switches or dimmers that allow you to set it for just the right amount of light. The ones shown here are desk/table top versions, but a floor version could be made upon request.

Sapele, Walnut

22.5" L x 15" W x 12.25" H

This tea box uses a ledge that is imbedded into the sides to support the entire box. All 6 legs lock onto the ledge and each pair is tied together with a rung below the box. The Black Walnut was used to frame the flaring Sapele for a beautiful blend of brown tones with little contrast. The tray top with its protruding frame seems to act as shelter to the buttress-like legs which are a major element in the overall style of the box.

Spalted Oak Crotch

14" L x 9.75" W x 2.125" H

Rustic Plates are made from rough sawn pieces of firewood that are hand-picked while stacking each delivery of wood to Moss & Stone. Since most of the pieces chosen have spalting, checks and/or bark inclusions, they are not usually suited for use with foods that are moist or wet. The designer normally applies a high gloss lacquer and then buffs it to a satin sheen with fine steel wool. All of the rough edges created during splitting and by the chain saw as the wood was harvested are left unsanded. Every place cut with a chisel is sanded and finished to reveal the beauty within these pieces otherwise destined to become ashes. Each of these pieces is a one-of-a-kind made by nature and revealed by Moss & Stone.

Zebra Wood, Vellum

7.75" L x 7.75" W x 21" H

"Round Loop Lamps rely on the rigidity of the shade material to support the whole piece. The base and top ring have a channel cut into them to hold the ends of the shade. The three rings just above center of the piece are placed at the same level as the bulb within the lamp to help diffuse the light. Since all of the rings are cut from the same piece of wood, the designer was able align the grain of the Zebra wood from top to bottom. This lamp has a Hi/Lo in-line switch and all components are rated for 60 watt bulbs."

Curly Maple, Makore

13.75" L x 13.75" W x 2" H

The brick-red Makore rim frames the shallow cut into the light Maple and is framed itself by the undercut edge of this bowl. The bowl that inspired this one had a segmented rim while this rim is a solid piece. It was cut from a larger piece and saved instead of being thrown into the scrap pile. The glue and finish are food safe. This will make a great center piece, and it also presents well on a shelf or wall. The true pleasure to be had from this piece is when you hold it. The weight, in contrast to its size, and the curve of the perimeter make it feel wonderful in your hands.

Figured Makore

16"L x 16"W x 1.5"H

Although it is part of a pair this platter can stand alone. The beautiful grain will shimmer like satin no matter what angle the light hits it. Serving your favorite dessert or Hors d'oeuvre the wonderful Makore Grain will provide a fanciful backdrop.

Although it is part of a pair this platter can stand alone and make a bold statement on any table. The large rim that the designer has seemingly set afloat on the bowl's tapered edge will frame your food of choice with the swimming glimmers of light on the Makore grain.

Zebra wood, Walnut

Multiple

Moss & Stone utensils are all unique with special uses in mind. Some are for tasting the sauce you've been stirring all day. Some are for reaching into the chili pot that has been slowly cooking over the campfire. Others are for reaching to the bottom of the deepest pot and bringing out the dumpling with just the right amount of gravy. Whichever you choose, you can be certain that before aesthetic appeal, function was the first consideration.

Salvaged Spalted Maple

12.25" L x 12.25" W x 6" H

Dubbed "Greeneville" for its Greeneville, Tennessee origin, this bowl seems to be never-ending as you follow the many spalt lines it contains. From swirls to streaks to loops, they are intermingled with the bark inclusions, knots and various hues present in the entire bowl. Had the wood for this bowl not been salvaged, it was destined for the landfill. Unfortunately this was one of only 2 pieces saved. The small pieces left from making this bowl will be turned into smaller pieces. Look for them throughout the site.

Curly English Walnut

23" L x 23" W x 1.5" H

Sheer scale and heft make this platter a piece that will command much attention. Add to that the striking contrast and intriguing shapes in the grain and this platter will be admired even more. Like most Moss & Stone work, the bottom of this platter is just as appealing as the top. Maintaining a tried-and-true feature for serving platters, the small edge bead minimizes loss of your treats over the edge and adds to the overall aesthetic. The owner of this platter ordered 2 small matching sauce/dip bowls to accompany it. Since the plank was noted while making it, the same wood was used for the bowls to ensure they matched as closely as possible.

French Walnut

10" L x 10" W x 2" H

Subtle yet beautiful contrast between sapwood and heartwood in this bowl have a consistent, golden honey tone from one side to the other. Like most Moss & Stone work, the bottom of this bowl is just as appealing as the top. The food-safe finish has been waxed and buffed to a glass-like sheen allowing it to be presented as a decorative piece when not in use serving your favorite snack.

English Brown Oak

11" L x 11" W x 1.25" H

The designer named this "Leaf Plate" for how the edges are curled up the way a leaf does when it dries in nature. The Medullary rays in this piece of Oak that seem to emanate from the low spot in the dish, bark inclusions and contrasting sapwood edge add another whole dimension to the plate.

The Bread and Cheese Boards are offered in a variety of woods ranging greatly in color and contrast to appeal to everyone's taste. They are finely sanded and saturated with Walnut oil for a smooth, lasting finish. The combination of the oil finish and tight-grained woods chosen for these boards helps them resist the penetration of moisture from foods and washing.

Cherry

12.25" L x 12.25" W x 1.5" H

To look at this piece, someone familiar with Cherry might think this is an old one or has been stained. In reality it is just from a richly colored, old plank of Cherry. The wood was given to the designer by a blacksmith in Pennsilvania who said the plank had been milled for 30+ years. It is truly a piece to be cherished knowing that it was destined to be tossed into a burn pile had the designer not taken it.

Black Walnut

12.25" L x 12.25" W x 1" H

Designed and finished for lots of kitchen use, this platter will easily hold pies, cookies, cakes or any other treat you can imagine serving on it. The small edge bead will prevent the loss of any goodies over the edge. Despite its intended use, it could double as a centerpiece if protected with a doily and arranged with a few candles and fresh-cut flowers.

Birdseye Maple, Sapele

3.25" L x 3.25" W x 6.125" H

Making biscuits will never be the same for the owner of this biscuit cutter. The earthy tones of the two contrasting woods make this piece a pleasure to view. It can be displayed proudly in any kitchen. The shape of the handle allows for gripping from the side or top with comfort of the user in mind. A small air hole in the bell makes the freshly cut dough release with ease and the large cutting diameter produces 3" biscuits. It is finely sanded and finished with 100% pure Walnut oil.

With amazing curl and simple lines, this platter begs to be held in the light as it shimmers at every angle. Its clusters of highlights remind you of satin that has been gathered along the edges and will forever be so. While its beauty might suggest this piece is for display only, it is also a perfectly functional serving platter that will be admired for years to come.

Big Leaf Maple

Quilted Big Leaf Maple - A wonderful example of Mother Nature's ability to produce a beautiful texture like only she can. The designer is charged with the task of revealing as much of this beauty as possible while producing a functional piece of art. This platter's size and heft will allow the user to serve heavy items such as drinks and a pitcher or provide an extravagant backdrop for a warm stack of cookies. Regardless of use, its beauty should be made visible for all to admire.

Birdseye Maple

This beautiful corner table was commissioned by a couple in Virginia who had a clear image of what they wanted before coming to Moss & Stone. The designer worked with them to develop the initial drawings from photos and notes provided which led to the piece you see here. The gentle curvature of the table's edge adds to the ease of use while the stunning concentration of eyes on the table's solid, Birdseye Maple surface will complement any space in which they decide to place it.

This baby rattle was designed and built fully functional as a gift. It is nice enough to be a precious memento of a child's birth. Made mostly of walnut, it will withstand knocks against all of a baby's favorite surfaces. Even the balls inside are made of wood and the resulting tone is sure to please any baby.
